ABOUT
The Artist
Martha Laurens is a researcher in calligraphy study, the Chief Creative Designer, educator, calligrapher, and penman for Martha Scribe's Studio. She leads the creative direction for all Visuals, Marketing, and Products within the Scribes and Beyond portfolio brand, an art and calligraphy supply store based in Sydney, Australia.
A creator of Fun Scripts for all levels, the Spencerian Twist, and Dancing with Spencerian, built up her skill through Calligraphy studies in the USA, Brighton Calligraphy mentored by Ewan Clayton, and courses at the King's Foundation Traditional School of Art in the UK and have also achieved three International Proficiency and Excellence certifications in Art and Penmanship from the IAMPETH (International Association of Master Penman, Engravers and Teachers of Handwriting).
My passion for calligraphy has brought me to the depth of preserving its art through mindful learning that nurtures the next generation and creates traditional and contemporary works that can be enjoyed by many people who receive them. Nothing beats one-of-a-kind handcrafted works for loved ones.
With a background in Art her whole life and a career in apparel design, graphic design, and teaching for decades, she shares her knowledge through virtual demos on social media, monthly panel talks and calligraphy meetups at her studio to encourage young people to preserve the art of Calligraphy and Penmanship.
She is well known for teaching the Foundation to Pointed Pen Calligraphy Roundhand and Spencerian to help people create their writing style. She is also one of the Instructors of IAMPETH (International Association of Master Penman Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting)'s Virtual Class 2021, Calligraphy Italia, Washington Calligraphy Guild, Australian Society of Calligrapher, and Other Calligraphy guilds in the USA.
Martha Scribes focuses on Typography, Handwriting analysis, Corporate Branding, Graphic Design, and Traditional Scripts, including Foundational hand, Italic, Cursive Writing, Spencerian Script, Engrosser's Script / Copperplate / Roundhand, Illuminated Manuscript design, and Fine Art painting in both traditional and contemporary.
